About the Item
[Authentic Artwork] ◆ Bisen Fukuda ◆ Chinese Landscape ◆ Lake Dongting ◆ Illustration of the Great Dongting ◆ Box ◆ Handpainted ◆ Paper ◆ Hanging Scroll ◆
Explore the artistic world of Bisen Fukuda through this captivating piece titled "Chinese Landscape - Lake Dongting" portraying the beauty of the Great Dongting. Handcrafted on paper and encased in a title box, this hanging scroll invites you to experience Fukuda's mastery.
Bisen Fukuda (1875-1963), a distinguished Japanese painter, gained renown for his landscape artworks. Despite the challenges of World War II, many of his pieces, once thought lost, have resurfaced in recent years. A special exhibition at the Himeji City Museum of Art delves into his life's works, featuring depictions of Japanese national parks and the Fuji Five Lakes area.
Born in Hyogo Prefecture, Fukuda studied under Yonesen Kubota and later became a Fellow of the Japan Art Academy. Throughout the Meiji period, he garnered awards at prominent exhibitions, showcasing his talent in landscapes across Japan and China. His later years saw the creation of the magnum opus "30 Chinese Picture Scrolls," a decade-long endeavor.
The featured artwork captures Dongting Lake, the second-largest freshwater lake in China, located in the northeastern part of Hunan Province. Fukuda's painting style is marked by gentle brushstrokes, employing wash colors and ink.
The hand-drawn piece on paper is housed in a title box. While the paper exhibits small stains, wrinkles, curls, and creases, it remains in good condition. The cover also displays some small stains, wrinkles, curls, and creases but is generally well-preserved.
This is an authentic masterpiece, worthy of consideration. Bid accordingly.

Japanese Meiji Riverside Scroll Painting, c. 1900
Located in Chicago, IL
Although western painting was initially embraced during Japan’s Meiji period (1868-1912), artists brought on a revival of traditional painting styles as they sought to create a modern Japanese style with roots in the past. This exquisite hanging scroll demonstrates the preference for soft layering of gray tones with judicious use of color. The landscape is rendered in soft ink washes that subtly distinguish between water, mountain, and sky. The scroll painting...
