About the Item

Oil on plywood, 24 x 29 cm (unframed)Coeval frame, 42 x 48 cm Signed and dated on the back, this charming painting by Luigi Pagan (active in the first half of the twentieth century) depicts a lively foreshortening of Chioggia, with a striking view of the Calle d'Oro animated by popular figures. The artist captures the atmosphere of the lagoon town through a dense, textural painting technique characterized by an expressive pointillism that is reminiscent, in some ways, of the work of Gino Pavan, his contemporary. It is not known whether there was a direct dialogue between the two painters, but a stylistic commonality related to the vibrant rendering of light and urban movement is evident. The work features a rich color texture, where reflections of light on the architecture and the shadows of the figures merge into a dynamic and detailed composition. The facades of the houses, rendered with spatula strokes and textural brushstrokes, create a play of chiaroscuro that fully restores Chioggia's visual identity. The probably original shaped wooden frame accompanies the painting with sobriety and historical consistency. Note: Shipping available worldwide.
