Maillart Diogene Ulysse (1840-1926) "Portrait of a young girl" / "Portrait d'une jeune fille" Oil on canvas, signed on the right Dimensions of the canvas : 55 x 46 cm Dimensions with its frame : 74 x 65 cm Artist exhibited in France : in Paris at the Petit Palais, at the church of Saint Augustin, at the town hall of the 3rd district and at the National School of Fine Arts, at the Castle of Chantilly, at the Museum of Fine Arts of Angers and internationally : in Italy, at the Villa Medicis of Rome and in Romania, at the Castle Iulia Hasdeu of Câmpina. >> Diogene Ulysse Maillart (1840-1926) French painter, Diogene Ulysse MAILLART is the father of the painter Roger Maillart and the grandfather of the painter Jean-Denis Maillart. Born into a family of modest peasants in a small town in the Oise region on October 28, 1840, Diogene was a student at the Imperial School of Drawing, then at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris in the studio of Léon Cogniet. In 1864, he won the Grand Prix de Rome. In 1869, upon his return to Paris after four years at the Villa Medici, he was appointed professor of drawing at the Manufacture nationale des Gobelins, an activity he pursued until 1919. His students included René Bellanger, Charles Cottet, Edmond Defonte, Marie Fournets-Vernaud, Iulia Hasdeu, Jean de la Hougue, Albert Huyot, Maximilien Luce, and Edouard Vuillard. At the same time, he exhibited several works each year at the Salon des artistes français, until his death in 1926. As a history painter and portraitist, landscape painter, illustrator for major Parisian publishing houses, author of cartoons for tapestries and stained glass windows and teacher, his works are exhibited in France and abroad.

Portrait of a young Russian or French girl executed in charcoal and gouache on paper. Harlamoff was most renowned for his masterful portraits of young girls of which this is a fine example, chosen for their charming and innocent beauty. Signed lower left A. Harlamoff. Signed on the reverse Alexei Harlamoff. Alexei Harlamoff was born in the village of Dyachevka near Saratov on the Volga. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, and he won both a Gold Medal and a scholarship in 1868. The scholarship enabled him to travel to Paris, where he studied under portrait painter Léon Bonnat, and by 1874 he was visited by Russian marine painter Alexei Bogoliubov, who reported back to Russia on the young artist’s visible success.
