"Man in Black and White, " Remarkable Portrait of Young Man by Cohen
About the Item
Bold and intense, this portrait -- or perhaps self-portrait -- of a young man with pale skin, dark, flowing hair and a direct stare was painted by T. Cohen in the first decades of the 20th century. He has painted a cluster of figures and an animal in repose behind him, all in tones of rust, deep red and burnt sienna. Nothing is known about the artist, though it was painted on artist board sold in Chicago, giving a hint of his whereabouts. In the end, this painting presents a strong but enigmatic snapshot of a man long gone, but someone we would want to know. The painting is beautifully framed. (Dimensions include frame.)
