About the Item

Matteo Lovatti (Italian, 1861-1909) A Fine 19th-Century Oil on Canvas Titled 'Church V. State - The Fencing Lesson'. The finely detailed artwork depicting an interior tavern scene, featuring a colorful jester playfully fencing with a monk dressed in white habits, surrounded by an audience of a striking server beauty standing with a wine fiasco in hand, seated troubadours, soldiers, and other gentlemen. A mandolin rests on the floor beside a tip-bowl, adding to the lively atmosphere; within an ornate white-gilt-and-gesso carved frame. Signed: M. Lovatti, Roma. (lower left). Circa: Rome, 1880-1890. Provenance: MacConnal-Mason & Son, London; Willoughby Toschi Fine Arts Gallery, San Francisco. Matteo Lovatti the Younger (Rome, 1861 – after 1909) was an Italian painter, mainly of genre subjects. His grandfather, with the same name (1769-1849) was an architect , who worked for the Papal authorities during the early 19th century. He was influenced by the circle of realist genre painters around Mariano Fortuny in Rome. He exhibited in 1880 at Turin: On 14 March 1878 in Roma and that same year in Milan a work titled "Il Piccolo Venditore di Violette" (Young Vilolette Seller). He also exhibited "Vita moderna" (Modern Life) in Rome in 1883, Turin in 1884 "Una partita alle carte and Male Portrait" (A Card Game with Partrait). In 1909 he exhibited at The Watercolor Association in Rome: "Il Vaticano and Villa de' Quintili" (The Vatican and the Villa Quintili). Label #1 at verso reads: Willoughby-Toschi Fine Arts Gallery 521 Sutter Street San Francisco, California Matteo Lovatti - Italian School Painter of history and genre. Born in Rome August 1, 1861/ Lovatti exhibited in Turin, Milan, Rome, Munich and Vienna. Matteo Lovatti spent most of his life in Rome. E. Benezit, Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs, et Graveurs, vol 5, p. 647. Won Prize in London in 1923. Label #2 at verso reads: MacConnal-Mason & Son., Ltd.
