About the Item
Painted a year after the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts (Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes) debuted in Paris, introducing the style we now call Art Deco which proceeded to sweep the world, this fabulous depiction of an odalisque also reflects a masterpiece from decades earlier -- "Olympia" by Édouard Manet. Just like the 1863 painting by the French master, this painting by Gunnar Torhamn depicts a languorous female nude, stretched out in her bed and cosseted by her pillows, who is attended to by a Black servant. However, in Torhamn's case the figure looks at her reflection in a hand mirror rather than the viewer. This painting is really two paintings in one, because the reverse shows an equally important painting, this time influenced by German Expressionism: a businessman with shifty eyes and slick hair, looking at a half-nude woman, perhaps a prostitute. Both sides of this painting show that Torhamn was familiar with the history of Western art and followed what artists were doing across the Continent. In later years, Torhamn became well known for his depiction of fishermen, farmers and other workers. In our opinion, this is one of his finest works. It is signed and dated in the lower righthand corner. The painting retains an old auction label on the reverse.
