About the Item
Because Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg, a celebrated 19th century Danish painter, used his "Narcissus" painting as a teaching tool, at least five of his pupils painted sight variations of the original between 1820 and 30. An authority on Eckersberg's work states that this painting is one. Like the original, this painting uses a rich palette of dark reds and rosy flesh tones, and depicts a reclining nude Narcissus -- stretching near a quiet pool of water. Narcissus -- whose perfect form was inspired by the Greek and Roman eras which glorified the nude -- is resting on a deep, rusty-red robe, and every detail is beautifully captured.
