About the Item
High style and highly-stylized, this Art Deco painting by Bruno Seuchter presents an aquatic scene teeming with life, centered around Neptune with his trident held high. Surrounding him are a coterie of mermaids, hippocampi, tritons and -- in the background -- sailing ships and other symbols of life on the edge of Neptune's kingdom. Seuchter's palette is rich and complex -- old gold, aquamarine, dove grey and rusty red -- suggesting that this painting may have been the basis for a mural or tapestry. The artist is known for his designs and typography in the Art Nouveau/Jugenstil period, but he continued to do important work into the 1920s. The painting is mounted on board, and is signed in the lower righthand corner. The reverse includes an artist stamp as well. Dimensions include matte; visible painting itself is 15.75 inches high by 15.5 inches wide.
