"Nude Bather, Dominican Republic, " 1930s Tropical Scene Watercolor
About the Item
Painted by Wilmot Heitland, one of America's great watercolorists in the 1930s, this sun-drenched depiction of a native Dominican, nude and stepping toward a pool of water, captures the lush tropical locale with great color and texture. The bright sun, which is bleaching the bather's hat and clothing in the lower left hand corner, contrasts with areas of deep shadow and bright foliage. When he wasn't painting High Society scenes for the illustrations he did for countless magazines in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, Heitland loved to capture the natives, as he does here, in tropical locales such as Hawaii and the Dominican Republic.
