"Nudes with Fruit Bowl", French-Influenced 1940s Painting, Oil on Canvas
About the Item
Clearly influenced by Raoul Dufy, Marie Laurencin and Hollywood set designs, this striking depiction of two nude female figures around a table with a bowl of fruit was painted in 1942 by Thelma Salter. Both the figure in the foreground, depicted in rich, solid burnt sienna hues, and the ghostly silhouetted figure in the background are juxtaposed with surreal bits of flowers, branches and textured patterns that bring to mind "An American in Paris." Salter lived in upstate New York in relative obscurity, though she executed another figural painting that was used in an advertisement for La Tausca simulated pearls in 1946. She married Leon Salter, who took on the name Zoute for his artistic work. The painting is signed in the lower right hand corner; it is stretched but not framed.
