"Peace After the War", Important Surrealist Painting, De Chirico Influence, 1933
About the Item
Undoubtedly the most important example of American Surrealism we have ever offered, this 1933-vintage painting by Daniel Koerner depicts a deeply-fissured Classical statue and a female nude in a courtyard framed by a Gothic Revival church and, in the distance, a grand columned building. Koerner's scene is clearly influenced by the dreamlike scenes painted by Giorgio de Chirico, but instead of arcaded piazzas from Italian townscapes, Koerner is putting his figures in a more eclectic -- and very American -- architectural setting. There is an eerie, post-war calm to the scene, with damaged buildings and spaces devoid of life. The artist used tempera, a quick-drying and demanding medium that painters increasingly experimented with in the 1940s, 50s and 60s. After his death, the painting was exhibited at a show on Surrealism in the 1970s. It is signed and dated in the lower lefthand corner. The painting is not framed.
