About the Item
Bold, high-energy and striking, this Art Deco mural depicts a battle in 19th century America, with an Indian chief on horseback in full battle regalia, including a feather headdress, and another with a Mohawk, fighting a Pioneer. The entire scene is highly stylized and full of drama, like a scene out of 1930s Hollywood, and the colors are brilliant, including ruddy browns, off-whites and a thrilling red -- used for the chief's loincloth and the bloody wounds of the white man. It is not clear if this painting was executed to stand alone, or if it was part of a larger mural, but it is likely that it was painted by a New England artist. The medium is oil paint on Masonite.
