In the late nineteenth century, there were porcelain companies in Austria and Germany that painted their porcelain pieces in the Royal Vienna style, as there was not a Royal Vienna company during this period. At this time, there was a resurgence in the demand for beautifully painted porcelain pieces. The Vienna company closed in 1864. Many of these "Royal Vienna" porcelain masterpieces were after famous paintings that are in museums. Many of these companies painted magnificent portrait plates, porcelain plaques, vases and urns. The painting on many of these pieces, like this plate are museum quality, and heavily embellished with intricate raised gilding.
