"Sea Battle, " Very Fine Painting on Leather with Studded Leather Frame, 1920s

About the Item

Clearly painted by a master hand when Tudor Revival and Mediterranean Revival homes were the rage in America, this is a remarkable example of painting on leather depicting one of the favorite themes of the day -- great sailing ships on the high sea. This example shows several great galleons pounding away at each other with their cannons, on a deep blue sea and a gilded sky. Though the paint is spotted with black now, the overall effect of age is enhanced. The painting is initialed with a capital "F" in the lower right hand corner.
