"Sailing on the Nile, " Rare Covered Art Deco Box with Egyptian Pyramids
About the Item
Striking and rare, this round covered Art Deco box depicts two traditional boats with sails on the Nile River, with two of the great Pyramids of Egypt in the background, and palm trees and reeds along the river's edge. This piece was designed by Gunnar Nylund for Rorstrand pottery in Sweden. Before he became known for his organic forms and mottled glazes in the post-World War II period, Nylund designed a line of very fine Art Deco pieces in what he called a "flambe" glaze: rich browns or slate blues (as here), highlighted with gold. Nylund worked for Rorstrand from 1931 to 1958.
