About the Item

Boldly painted in a palette of spring green, jet black and mango, this very strong Art Deco maquette for a book cover was painted in the late 1920s by a promising artist -- Helene Haase -- for a commercial art or graphic design course. The cover design depicts spiky palm fronds, fractured and juxtaposed in the classic Cubist manner, suggesting the South Pacific setting for Jack London's stories, published in 1911. London's short story collection was entitled something slightly different -- "South Sea Tales" -- but the artist clearly took license to suggest a modern design for what was already a classic publication, something very different than what would have been au courant in 1911. The painting is gouache on "Monogram" artist board, produced by Favor, Rule and Company, with offices in New York, Chicago and Boston.
