"Aloha, The Universal Word, " Art Deco Study for Hawaiian Mural Series by Savage
About the Item
Extremely rare and important, this painting by Eugene Savage served as the preparatory study for one of six monumental Art Deco murals commissioned by the Matson Shipping company in 1938, and intended for display in its S.S. Lurline ship which carried passengers from the West Coast of the United States to the Hawaiian islands. The beginning of World War II compelled the company to put the murals in storage, where they remained until recently when they were displayed for the public to admire at the "Art Deco Hawai‘i" exhibition organized by the Honolulu Museum of Art in 2014. Although out of public view for decades, Matson used photographs of the murals to grace the menus of the restaurants in its ships, which became cherished -- and renowned -- among generations of tourists traveling to and from the islands; today the menus are collected in their own right. This study was for the "Aloha, The Universal Word" mural, and depicts a semi-nude male figure at its center, being given a flower lei by a female figure in a dark pink gown, surrounded by no fewer than 24 other figures, many nude or semi-nude, demonstrating the welcome that "Aloha" represents. The repeated rhythm of the groups of female and male figures, the stylized waves in the lower righthand corner, and the massive flower garland being woven by the female figures, are all hallmarks of the high Art Deco style that Savage embraced. The artist was also responsible for a massive mural, also high style Art Deco, at Fair Park in Dallas, and for other Art Deco murals in Indiana, Pennsylvania and elsewhere. The medium is gouache on paper. (Dimensions include matte and frame; visible painting is 12 inches high by 22.5 inches wide.)

By Eugene Francis Savage

Painted by Eugene Savage -- arguably, America's most successful and prolific muralist in the Art Deco style, with important surviving paintings dating from the 1920s to the 1950s -- this study was made for a Zodiac-themed ceiling mural. The round painting features a night sky jeweled with bands of stars, and featuring several mythological figures such as Helios with his chariot and Cornucopia. "Nobel Prize for Peace", Pair of Mural Paintings by Savage, "Trust Law Labor"
By Eugene Francis Savage
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Large and remarkable, this pair of mural paintings -- perhaps serving as studies for much larger paintings -- were made in connection with the Nobel Prize for Peace by Eugene Savage, arguably America's leading Art Deco muralist in the 1930s and 40s. One painting is dedicated to the Nobel Prize, while the other is entitled "Trust-Laws-Labor-Peace." Both are centered around elegant female figures in Classical garb, one showing her with a sword, vanquishing an octopus while flanked by laborers and symbols of industry. Savage is best known for a spectacular set of murals illustrating the history and lore of Hawaii commissioned by Matson Shipping Line for the S.S. Lurline, executed in the 1940s but not installed until the 1950s. The artist also painted other series of murals and paintings, include an enormous mural...

"Justice Triumphant", Mural Study for Queens, Ny Courthouse, circa 1941-1942
By Eugene Francis Savage
Located in Philadelphia, PA
A striking example of WPA mural art, this study for one of the murals proposed for the new Queens Supreme Courthouse -- a 1930s Works Progress Administration project in Queens, New York -- was painted by Eugene Savage. Like many paintings from the period, the study is teeming with allegory and symbolism, surmounted at the top by the figure of Justice with a long sword, spurning businesspeople at her feet who offer gifts and favors. Savage is best known for a spectacular set of murals illustrating the history and lore of Hawaii commissioned by Matson Shipping Line for the S.S. Lurline, executed in the 1940s but not installed until the 1950s. The artist also painted other series of murals and paintings, include an enormous mural...
