"Nobel Prize for Peace", Pair of Mural Paintings by Savage, "Trust Law Labor"

About the Item

Large and remarkable, this pair of mural paintings -- perhaps serving as studies for much larger paintings -- were made in connection with the Nobel Prize for Peace by Eugene Savage, arguably America's leading Art Deco muralist in the 1930s and 40s. One painting is dedicated to the Nobel Prize, while the other is entitled "Trust-Laws-Labor-Peace." Both are centered around elegant female figures in Classical garb, one showing her with a sword, vanquishing an octopus while flanked by laborers and symbols of industry. Savage is best known for a spectacular set of murals illustrating the history and lore of Hawaii commissioned by Matson Shipping Line for the S.S. Lurline, executed in the 1940s but not installed until the 1950s. The artist also painted other series of murals and paintings, include an enormous mural for the Texas Centennial Buildings in Dallas, a group for the Elks National Memorial in Chicago, and a series celebrating the Seminole Indians and their home in the Everglades, now held by the Cummer Museum in Jacksonville. He also executed works for other public buildings in Chicago and Indiana, and for Columbia and Yale Universities. The paintings are oil on canvas; some time ago hinges were added so the paintings could serve as a folding screen.
