About the Item
Boldly painted in an expressionist palette that calls to mind the work of Edvard Munch and other Nordic painters who were in the artistic vanguard of the 20th century, this depiction of a standing male nude was made by Jocke Åkerblom in Sweden. The artist studied with Oscar Björck and Gösta von Hennigs at the Art Academy in Stockholm in the 1920s. Later he studied abroad in Paris, Berlin and Corsica; he won the Ester Lindahl scholarship in 1943 and 1944. Over his career, Åkerblom was especially interested in the male figure, painting friends and models multiple times. The painting is signed in the lower lefthand corner. The reverse side shows an exhibition label, indicating that the model's name was Benny.
