About the Item

An exceptional museum quality portrait of incredibly unusual subject matter. The unidentified androgynous figure with a full length facial scar resting their hands on a ledge. Behind the person is a surrealist background with numerous symbolic images, nude figures, architectural elements, and landscape. Ferguson was a PAFA graduate, winning the prestigious Cresson Prize twice, (1926-1927) and traveling to Paris, where he was deeply influenced by the surrealist movement. He exhibited at PAFA twenty times between 1925 and 1952. His works can be found in numerous private and public collections including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the Reading Public Museum. This is one of the artist's finest works, which are nearly impossible to find outside of institutional collections.
