About the Item

Two exquisite Fête Galante scenes from France, painted in the early 19th century in Rococo style. The first depicts various groups of figures as they gather in a park, with classical statues flanking a balustrade and a fountain in the distance. The second depicts another view of the park, this one of a sweeping staircase rising up to another fountain. Both canvases are painted in soft, sepia tones that give them a wonderful dream-like quality, and each is framed in a glorious 19th or 18th century hand-carved, gilt frame featuring beadwork, floral scrolls, and a beribboned cartouche at the top. The paintings are unsigned and have labels from R. Lerondelle, Paris affixed to the reverse of the frames. The canvases themselves are in very good condition, with some craquelure. Some looseness of the canvases within the frame. The frames have chips and losses with some splitting to the corners, but overall remain solid and have a wonderful, worn patina. Please see photos. Sight dimensions are 15.5" by 11.5" From the Estate of Mark S. Pratt (1928-2023), Washington DC.
