"Two Nudes and Bowl of Fruit, " Masterful Cubist-Influenced Art Deco Oil Painting
About the Item
In our opinion, the finest work ever painted by Jules Schyl, one of Sweden's leading Modernists in the 1920s and 1930s, this spectacular piece depicts a female nude in the upper right quadrant, accompanied by a tabletop scene incorporating a nude sculpture and a vividly-hued bowl of fruit. It is clear that Cubism, Art Deco decorative art and Cezanne's still lifes all influenced Schyl's painting, but the artist brought his own sensibilities as well, balancing the human figure with inanimate objects in a way that is dynamic and energetic; moreover, he used a palette that is rich with vivid jewel tones: emerald, sapphire, jade and citrine. Schyl was born in Denmark but spent most of his career in Sweden, exhibiting widely across Europe in the 1920s through the 1950s. In 1924, he joined "The Twelve," a southern Swedish modernist group, several members of which had studied under André Lhote in Paris in 1912. Schyl's work is collected by the Museum of Modern Art in Stockholm, the Malmo Museum and the Art Gallery of Vikingsberg, among others. The painting is oil on canvas, and is beautifully framed.
