About the Item

A large painting by Italian artist Giuseppe Mazzei, depicts muse Urania with her classic attributes – globe, sun sphere, and compass in oak branches. Her dress is adorned with pearls and she wears a star diadem. A large eagle is sited spreading its wings in muse’s legs. The gilt painted background is patterned with geometrical shapes and Greek inscription “Οὐρανία”. Giuseppe Mazzei (1867-1944), an Italian master of painting and sculpture. Giuseppe Mazzei was born in Portoferraio on February 12, 1867, to Luigi Mazzei and Elisabetta Del Borgia. The family ran a winery on the island of Elba and in Genoa. Giuseppe attended primary school in Orbetello before moving to Genoa. The family spent their vacations on Elba; in the summer of 1880, while staying in Poggio with trips to Monte Capanne, the young Giuseppe met Telemaco Signorini, who pushed his father Luigi to enrol his son in Genoa's Academy of Fine Arts. He also knew the noble Pilade Del Buono, who held his own home in Poggio. In 1893, he joined the Genoese Artistic Family, where he met several painters, including Plinio Nomellini. Following that, in 1915, he was designated Academic Professor of Merit in the painting class of the Ligustica Academy of Fine Arts, and in 1919 he received a certificate from the Victory Exhibition in Genoa. He died in 1944 in Rijeka, where he had relocated with his son Leo during WWII and was buried at the Kosala cemetery. Giuseppe Mazzei's paintings were exhibited in Europe and Latin America and won numerous prizes.
