It is a place of perfection in nature, of reconciliation with our origin, of serenity towards our near reality. Paradises are there, waiting for us. We earn them sometimes, and some other times we are expelled from them and then their very existence becomes a reproach. Paradises are not ephemeral, though. All that belongs to Nature is ephemeral and boundless at the same time. It remains until the infinite and returns to the beginning to wither again and so on, over and over. Paradise escapes us, it slips out in our imagination of what it is. It disappears and then, just like everything we cannot hold, like everything vanishing away from our desire for grasping, it must be replicated, frozen in time, imitated at best, never to be lost again. We contemplate it in all its confines, we study it and scrutinise all its forms, line by line, each with different colours and nuances. We thus hold on to the ephemeral, we stop its decadence, we perpetuate beauty in our urge to negate its own death. The paradise reverts to the logic of the quest. Maybe the last voyage ever to be undertaken is that of defining a paradise through sheer technical mastery, through the use of an apparent wisdom, a meticulous ability to reproduce reality: to create some sort of artificial paradise, a world where everything is reproducible and interminable, and so all appears at last to be perfectly docile and tame. To believe in the absolute harmlessness of such a paradise. And very likely to open up an abyss afresh, a new irony (tragic o comic or perhaps both at the same time) about each petal of each of its artificial flowers, made in the image and according to the likeness of reality. Artificial Paradises intends to be a very own and concrete paradise in a very specific location. The tradition of reproduction/imitation in Asia forms part of its culture. The tenacious aim for perfection, or for the idea of perfection held about things, blurs the confine between what is and its perfect imitation. Frame: Black wood Color: Black and white Jean Ribière Biography: Jean Ribière, a renowned photographer, was national vice-president of the ANJRPC (National Association of Journalists, Reporters, Photographers and Filmmakers), whose president was Robert Doisneau and whose main members were Henri Cartier - Bresson and Raymond Depardon.  On his death in 1989, he bequeathed to his daughter, Hélène Tabes, 120,000 photographic documents (90,000 black - and - white negatives, 30,000 slides and about 2,000 prints), as well as 150 texts of documentary reports on the period 1941 - 1989. Born in Niort on 9 February 1922, Jean Ribière began his career in the photo department of the newspaper L'Indépendant des Pyrénées Orientales in 1940. In 1944, he married Micheline Vialle, also a journalist. Jean, an excellent photographer and Micheline, a great reporter, decided to create their own press agency "Ribière Presse Photo".  They soon sold their reports to more than a hundred French and foreign newspapers and magazines: L'Express, l'Aurore, Match, BBC London ... William Umpleby Kirk (Kirk and Sons) A photographer of the late Victorian era. Born in Hull and grew up nearby where, in the early 1870s, he set up his first photographic studio. His early work has survived and are collected. In 1881 Kirk movies to Cowes, Isle of Wight. Cowes at the time was the centre of yachting internationally. A sport of royalty and the rich and privileged. At Cowes boats and yachts were raced, bought, sold and of course shown off. Kirk photographed the boats and their owners. He specialised in Marine photography, in portraiture e.g a copy of Kirk’s photograph of The Marquis of Ormonde is held in the British National Archives at Kew. He also photographed groups at house parties, tutor groups and sports teams of Naval Cadets at Osborne Naval College. His photographs of the sumptuous interiors of large yachts remain to record that era. Kirk’s reputation grew when he photographed Queen Victoria’s yacht, HMY Alberta at a speed of 10 knots entering Cowes Harbour; this is said to be one of the first British photographs of a vessel in motion. (citation needed) and to have earned him the Royal Warrant to Queen Victoria. Photographs by Kirk of the yachts Bona and Ailsa, for example, were sold by auction at Christie’s, New York.
