1937 Matisse Fine-Line Portrait II — Heliogravure from Verve, Museum-Framed

About the Item

1937 Matisse Fine-Line Portrait II — Heliogravure from Verve Vol. I, Museum-Framed A single, unbroken line brings an entire character to life. This 1937 heliogravure by Henri Matisse captures a poised, flower-crowned sitter whose tilted gaze and delicate hand convey effortless elegance. Nearly a century later the drawing still feels startlingly fresh—an accessible blue-chip acquisition for the discerning modern-art buyer. Issued in the very first number of Verve (Paris, December 1937), the sumptuous art-and-literary quarterly founded by E. Tériade, this impression marries Fauvist spontaneity with modernist graphic design. The inaugural volume paired original prints by Matisse, Miró, Léger and more with texts by Joyce and Hemingway; only 2,000 complete sets were produced, making early plates exceptionally sought-after.
