Antique French Costume Prints of Nobles from Lorraine, 1625, Published c.1860
Description:
This captivating set of antique French costume prints showcases the striking nobility of Lorraine in 1625, as originally drawn by Jacques Callot and reimagined by Pauquet Frères in the 19th century. Created circa 1860, these prints are part of the esteemed Modes et Costumes Historiques series, celebrated for its accurate and elegant representations of historical dress.
The prints depict noble figures in their finest attire, embodying the sophistication and grandeur of the early 17th century in the French province of Lorraine. Each figure is adorned with luxurious fabrics, intricate embroidery, and refined accessories, meticulously rendered with Pauquet Frères’ signature hand-coloring and precise linework. The men wear dramatic capes, plumed hats, and swords, evoking the grandeur of the French court, while the noblewomen dazzle in elegantly tailored gowns adorned with delicate lace and jewelry.
These prints were more than decorative pieces when produced; they served as educational illustrations that offered insights into the styles and traditions of past centuries. Today, they are sought after by collectors, historians, and decorators who value their historical authenticity, artistic charm, and cultural importance. They also provide a beautiful focal point for interiors that celebrate classical elegance and refined heritage.
Pauquet Frères, active in the mid-19th century, were known for their keen attention to historical accuracy and their ability to capture the grace of bygone eras in vivid color. Their prints remain prized by collectors for both their beauty and the window they offer into the customs and style of French nobility.

17th Century Pair of Burin Prints by Giovanni Battista Vanni, Italy, 1642
By Antonio da Correggio, Giovanni Battista Vanni
Located in Cagliari, IT
A beautiful pair of burin engravings depicting "Saint Bernardo degli Uberti" and "Saint Hilary of Poitiers" two of the patron saints of the city included in the base of the cupola ( dome ) of Parma cathedral frescoed by Antonio Allegri known as Correggio (Correggio, August 1489-Correggio 5 March 1534) between 1524 and 1530. Admirable work by the great master in which his genius as a forerunner of the Baroque is fully seen.
In 1642 Giovanni Battista Vanni etched a series of fifteen plates from Correggio's frescoes.
Giovanni Battista Vanni was born in Pisa around 1599; he studied successively under Jacopo da Empoli, Aurelio Lomi, and Matteo Rosselli, and then became a disciple of Cristofano Allori. He is better known as an engraver than as a painter. From 1624 to 1632, he lived in Rome, then returning to Florence after visiting Venice.
In addition to the series of prints...
