About the Item
The original etching on paper depicts old stone bridge leading to the traditional old English cottages, surrounded by hills with fields and trees in the timeless English countryside landscape.
The etching is signed, numbered, titled, and dated by the artist on the lower margin, as well as with the artists's remark, "to Aunt Hazel"; apparently, this particular print was originally gifted by the artist to a family member. It has been professionally double matted and framed; warm brown and cream colors of the matting harmonize with the soft colors of the etching, and natural wood grain and carved bamboo pattern on the wooden frame add texture and definition to the piece.
The convenient size of the print allows it to be either used as a part of a picture wall, or displayed as a focal point; it will make a perfect addition to a wide range of interiors, from Traditional to Modern Country, Eclectic, Transitional, Organic Modern, Collected, or Contemporary.
Daniel Graves is the founder and director of the Florence Academy of Art in Florence, Italy. The school is dedicated to providing the highest level of instruction in classical drawing, painting and sculpture; the school has been in the forefront of classical realist art education and has trained a generation of prominent painters. Under Graves’ direction, The Florence Academy of Art has continued at the forefront of classical realist art education for over twenty-five years.
Graves graduated Cum Laude from the Maryland Art Institute in 1972, where he studied anatomy and painting with Joseph Sheppard and Frank Russell, then pursued etching and history painting with Richard Serrin at the Villa Schifanoia Graduate School of Fine Art in Florence, and later apprenticed under Nerina Simi who maintained a classical nineteenth-century studio there. Simi was the daughter of the Florentine painter Filadelfo Simi who had been a student of Jean-Leon Gerome, the head of the French Academy in Paris in the 1870s. After studying with Richard Lack at the Atelier Lack in Minnesota, where he also taught etching, he returned to Florence, where he came under the influence of Pietro Annigoni, best known for his portrait of the young Queen Elizabeth II. With such a rich background of training, Graves has created a style of oil painting that blends the Florentine tradition of Simi and the realist painters, such as Piero Annigoni, with the draftsmanship of the French artist, Charles Bargue.
In 2008, Graves and The Florence Academy of Art received the Excellence in Art Education Award from the Portrait Society of America; Daniel is a regularly invited jury panelist for The Foundation of Arts and Artists’ International Figurativas Painting & Sculpture Competition. Graves has had numerous solo and group shows in Europe and the United States, and his portraits, interiors, still lifes, and etchings are part of private and public collections world-wide.

Roman is using practical function as a common denominator to create emotionally charged art objects, blurring the boundary between art and function. While appreciating possibilities of ordinary materials, Roman is developing new mixed media multilayered composite varnishes and utilizes decorative gilding and mica veneer to actively engage ambient light, giving an additional aspect to relation of his objects to their environment. The decision to work in custom format was based on environmental concerns and opposition to culture of mass production and pure consumerism.
