"Element of Air, " Art Deco Print with Male Nude and Atlantis Theme by Avinoff

About the Item

Sensuous, finely rendered and full of mystery, this very rare signed print by Andrey Avinoff was one of several he created for "The Fall of Atlantis," a monumental and fantastical poem by George Golokhvastoff published in 1944. Each of Avinoff's images centered around a handsome, lithe nude male youth -- The Spirit of Atlantis -- shown her standing on a monumental, dark mask, with flame-engulfed bubble forms cascading down around him. The publication notes: "The Spirit of Atlantis is portrayed in the Siva posture. Over the black mask from which the Spirit emerges, arise many crystal spheres enveloped in flames, the topmost of which is the fiery orb of the Ankh." Avinoff was born in Russia and played an important role in the Czar's government, but the Communist revolution prompted him to make a new home in America. He was an artist-scientist, directing the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh, becoming known around the world for his knowledge of butterflies, and creating remarkable art such as this print. (Dimensions include matte and frame; image itself is 15.5 inches high by 12 inches wide.).

"Stone Fishing, " Important Art Deco Print with Nude Male Figures, Hawaii

Clearly demonstrating his love for the culture and sensuality of his adopted Hawaii, and brilliantly executed, Robert Lee Eskridge's "Stone Fishing" is a landmark in Art Deco printmaking. Although his work often shows the influence of Cubism and abstract art, Eskridge’s paintings and prints also capture the exoticism and sensuality of his subjects. He lived in Hawaii for many years and is renowned for his depictions of native Hawaiians...

"Asleep in the Hay, " Art Deco Print with Half-Nude Male by Lynd Ward, 1932
By Lynd Ward
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Famed for his woodcut book illustrations in the Art Deco era, Lynd Ward produced a series of dramatic images that reminded the reader of film noirs of the era, with spotlit figures in dark settings that seemed to presage flight, fear, hope and death. Unsigned plates from the books he illustrated are not uncommon, but signed prints such as this are rare. This image was an illustration for "Wild Pilgrimage" by Ward, published by Harrison Smith...
