About the Item

Funeral Procession in Rome with Hooded Figures and Clergy, London 1820 This remarkable hand-colored print, titled “A Funeral Procession in Rome,” offers an evocative portrayal of a traditional Roman Catholic funeral rite in early 19th-century Italy. Drawn by the artist K. Brodtmann in 1820 and published by William Sams in London, this lithograph provides a vivid, carefully staged glimpse into a deeply ceremonial aspect of Roman religious life. At the center of the composition is the coffin, ornately draped and carried on a litter adorned with tall white candles. Hooded penitents in long white robes, known as *confratelli*, process solemnly in front of and behind the bier. These members of religious brotherhoods, identifiable by their distinctive pointed hoods and blue cord sashes, traditionally took part in such rituals of public devotion and mourning. Behind them follows a group of clergy in white surplices and black cassocks. One priest stands out in an elaborate gold-embroidered chasuble, emphasizing his seniority or special role in the rite. To the right, more acolytes and a hooded standard-bearer carrying a religious banner complete the scene. At the far left, a layman hefts a large wooden cross, adding further gravity to the tableau. The architectural backdrop enhances the solemnity of the moment. Relief sculptures, marble inscriptions, and religious iconography line the church façade, including Latin epitaphs such as “Indulgentia Plenaria Pro Vivis et Defunctis” (“Plenary indulgence for the living and the dead”), pointing to the deep spiritual significance of the rite. The overall composition masterfully blends individual character study with architectural and ritual detail, underscoring the theatrical and communal nature of Roman public mourning. Published in London by William Sams, a prominent early 19th-century publisher known for his costume and ethnographic prints, this piece was intended to inform and captivate a British audience fascinated with European traditions and Catholic pageantry. Condition Report: Fair to good condition. Slight creasing and a noticeable fold in the lower portion, some edge wear and corner toning. Colors remain vibrant and figures are well-defined. Framing Tips: Frame in dark wood or antique gilt to reflect the print's historical subject. A cream or parchment-colored mat will enhance the solemn hues. Consider UV-protective glass to preserve delicate hand-coloring.
