About

"Mine Building", 1956, screenprint with hand-coloring, edition of 63

Catalog Raisonné reference: Prescott 22

Ben Shahn was certainly an iconic American artist during the Mid-Century period. This is a very large-scale print and a complex, multi colored one as well. There is one layer, one block done in a dark gray ink that lays down the brick pattern. Another, that is a dark black, used for the windows and roof tops. And then there are the colors! So many colors! It's more like a painting than a typical Ben Shahn print which are frequently just black ink on white, sometimes with one added color. This just explodes with colors. And it has a vibe! Ben Shahn pulled this print! The hand of the artist is all-over this piece! Brush signed lower right.

Inside the mat dimensions: 17.5 x 29, frame is 25" x 36".

This print has been recently re-framed in redwood frame and matted with archival acid free materials. Unfortunately, the glass has made photographing it somewhat difficult because of glare. Most noticeable in the black roof fields. They are really black, but because of the glare they seem to appear grayish. They are black!
