Highly collectible and hard to find mid-century "Pierrot & Harlequin 1918" lithograph by Pablo Picasso, circa 1950s. The print is in good vintage and measures 20.5" x 26" and is presented in a black wood frame with museum quality plexiglass. This mid-century version of the 1918 classic is white ink on brown paper; it is signed in the print. Cool piece! #3627
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Born in 1881, Pablo Ruiz y Picasso followed in his father’s footsteps as an academically trained painter and studied art at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in his native Spain. Picasso traveled for the first time to Paris at age 19, establishing a studio there in 1904. He soon began a relationship with Fernande Olivier, who modeled for many of his works throughout this early period. Picasso also shared a studio with Georges Braque, with whom he co-founded Cubism.
During World War I, Picasso designed sets and costumes for the Ballets Russes where he met his first wife, the Russian ballet dancer Olga Khokhlova. They married in 1918, and she gave birth to their son Paulo in 1921. Picasso’s family life inspired much of his art in the early 1920s. In 1927, Picasso met seventeen-year-old Marie-Thérèse Walter, who would become a prominent figure in his art. After Picasso separated from his wife in 1934, Walter gave birth to Maya, the artist’s second child, in 1935. Two years later, Picasso painted his most famous work during the tumultuous years of the Second World War, the eleven by twenty-five foot mural Guernica(1937).
During the 1930s Picasso had a relationship with two artists, Dora Maar and later Françoise Gilot. Gilot and their two children, Claude and Paloma, inspired Picasso’s art of the 1940s and 1950s. After the death of his first wife in 1955 and his separation from Gilot, Picasso married his second wife, Jacqueline Roque. Picasso spent the remainder of his life in the south of France with Roque, his last artistic muse, and produced art until his death in 1973 at the age of 91.
It is no exaggeration to say Picasso was one of the most prolific artists of the twentieth century. Estimations place his artistic output in the tens of thousands. When the artist mastered one medium, he moved to another and blurred the lines between traditionally separate crafts. Every phase of his creative production varied from the last, both in form and representation. A biographical thread weaves Picasso’s artworks together with each piece bridging the commonalities between the desires and compulsions with which he grappled throughout his long life.

Pablo Picasso
One of the most prolific and revolutionary artists the world has ever seen, Pablo Picasso had a tremendous impact on the development of 20th-century modern art. Although he is best known for his association with the Cubist movement, which he founded with Georges Braque, Picasso’s influence extends to Surrealism, neoclassicism and Expressionism.
“Every act of creation is, first of all, an act of destruction,” the Spanish artist proclaimed. In Picasso's Cubist paintings, he emphasizes the two-dimensionality of the canvas, breaking with conventions regarding perspective, foreshortening and proportion. Picasso was inspired by Iberian and African tribal art. One of his most famous pre-Cubist works is Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907), a painting considered immoral and shocking at the time for its depiction of nude women whose faces resemble Iberian tribal masks.
Picasso made many portraits in this style, most often of the women in his life, their expressively colored faces composed of geometric shards of surface planes. In Woman in a Hat (Olga), 1935, he painted his first wife as an assemblage of abstract forms, leaving the viewer to decipher the subject through the contrasting colors and shapes. Picasso was a tireless artist, creating more than 20,000 paintings, drawings, prints, ceramics and sculptures. Tracing his life’s work reveals the progression of modern art, on which he had an unparalleled influence.

Starting in the 1950s, Picasso worked with the linocut printer Hidalgo Arnéra to produce posters for ceramic exhibitions and bullfights. The printer described their working method as such: “Picasso worked at night; in the morning, Marcel the chauffeur brought what he had completed to the print shop with notes added by Jacqueline Roque. I pulled the proofs and returned them to [his home] La Californie at exactly 1:30. This regular rhythm of working continued for eight years, every day, except Saturday and Sunday.” This idiosyncratic procedure speaks to the collaborative effort of these printmaking ventures, which included his partner, his printer, and his chauffeur
