About the Item

A fine example of a large engraving assembled from six printing plates, by well known German artist Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640). Rubens was born in Siegen, Westphalia, Germany and studied at various times under Tobias Verhaecht, Adam van Noort, and Otto van Veen. He was active in Belgium and Germany, and is most well known for his Counter reformation religious painting. This engraving, where Rubens had staged the battle between the Amazons and the Greek warriors, was the largest graphic to come out of his workshop and it was dedicated to Aletheia Talbot, Countess of Arundel. Rubens describes the noblewoman as an “outstanding heroine” and relates her to the combative Amazons. Along the bottom border it reads: “Excellentissimae Heroinæ Alathiæ Taboth Magni Comitis Arundelli Supremi Britanniae Mareschalci Coniugi Lectissimae Hanc Amazonum Pugnam Obsequii Et Observantiae Argumentum. Petrus Paullus Rubens L.M.D.D. [Libenter Meritoque Dedicavit] cum privilegiis Regis Christianissimi Principum Belgarum et Ordinum Bataviæ / Lucas Vorstermann fecit / Antwerpiæ KaI. Ianuarij MDCXXIII”. The original plates for the engraving were produced circa 1623. This six plate engraving is framed under glass in a molded giltwood frame.
