Set of Two Botanical Prints of Floral Classification by T Bromme c1865
This elegant set of two hand-colored lithographs was published circa 1865 by German geographer and educator Traugott Bromme as part of his comprehensive *Illustrirter Hand-Atlas der Erde und der Menschheit*. The prints together form a complete botanical study of the Linnaean system of plant classification, illustrating over 100 examples of floral structure and reproductive variation. This set offers both scientific insight and artistic charm, making it ideal for collectors of antique botanical illustrations or historical educational materials.
The first print (Plate 34) illustrates flowering plants grouped by the number and arrangement of their stamens and pistils. Classic Linnaean groupings such as *Monandria*, *Diandria*, *Triandria*, through to *Polyandria* and *Didynamia* are presented in neatly labeled boxes, each containing finely detailed drawings of flowers showing differences in floral anatomy. Each example is shown in subtle pastel tones and clear linework, demonstrating Bromme’s commitment to both clarity and visual appeal.
The second print (Plate 35) continues the classification, depicting plant orders such as *Tetradynamia*, *Monadelphia*, *Diadelphia*, *Syngenesia*, and *Gynandria*. Notably, it also features *Cryptogamia*, including lower plant forms like ferns, mosses, algae, lichens, and fungi—rarely shown in decorative prints of this period. The inclusion of non-flowering species alongside detailed floral diagrams demonstrates a broader scientific perspective than most botanical works of the era.
Together, these two prints form a complete botanical overview of 18th and 19th-century plant taxonomy, designed to educate and inspire. Bromme’s work remains a testament to the golden age of scientific illustration, where education and art went hand in hand.
Condition report:
Set of two original hand-colored lithographs from 1865. Both sheets in very good condition with mild age toning and light edge foxing. No tears, stains, or repairs. Crisp impressions and vibrant original hand coloring.
Tips for framing:
These two prints are best framed side by side with a uniform light ivory mat and a narrow dark wood or natural oak frame. A horizontal layout preserves the visual continuity of the classification system and makes an ideal centerpiece for a study, library, or botanical-themed space.
