"The Good Samaritan", Remarkable Art Deco Relief Sculpture w/ Two Male Nudes
About the Item
Remarkable and unique, this carved and painted wood relief sculpture depicts two nude male figures, one assisting the other, possibly illustrating the Biblical tale of the Good Samaritan. The figure being helped is entirely unconscious, his head sagging to one side, while the helping figure's head is down as well, full of concentration and concern. Each of the figures is beautifully modeled, and painted in rich, ruddy tones that make the skin and muscles come alive. The artist was Juan de Ávalos y Taborda, a Spanish sculptor best known for his public sculptures and memorials, including a massive monument to Luis Carrero Blanco in Santoña. The sculpture is not signed, but stayed with his descendants until recently.
