"Hercules and the Bull", Mythological Relief Sculpture with Male Nude, di Signa

About the Item

Boldly sculpted and beautifully finished with a deep mossy green glaze, this bas relief sculpture depicts a nude Hercules, possibly carrying the Cretan bull, followed by a robed female figure with boar and hare. Clearly influenced by Classical precedents, the relief is strongly three-dimensional and the nude is beautifully modeled. Sculpted and molded in the early 20th century by Manifattura di Signa -- an Italian pottery workshop based in Florence that was established at the end of the 19th Century -- this is the only example of this panel we have seen.
