"St. George and the Dragon", Large Bronze Relief Sculpture with Male Nude

About the Item

Large and impressive, this bronze bas relief rondel depicts a nude St. George on his valiant horse, spearing a fearsome dragon below. The relief is bold and expressive, and the bronze has gained a rich, pale green verdigris patina from years of exposure to the weather. Clearly this piece was mounted on the facade of an institutional building -- perhaps a bank or civic building -- and was salvaged when the building was demolished in recent years. The rondel was attached to the facade with iron bolts, the rust from which is evident around two original holes in the bronze.
