"Blessing the Fishing Industry, " Art Deco Bas Relief Bronze Sculpture with Nude

About the Item

Sculpted by Walker Hancock, who spent many summers in the Gloucester area north of Boston, surrounded by fishermen, fishing boats and other evidence of the industry, this rare bas relief rondel depicts a nude male angel with a fish in one arm and a fishing net in the other. Rich with allegory, the figure is clearly a sign of abundance and prosperity in the industry, and illustrates Hancock's love of the male figure, most famously embodied in his Pennsylvania Railroad memorial in the main waiting room of 30th Street Station in Philadelphia.
