"Placing the Sandal, " Bas Relief Masterpiece with Nudes by Levillain

About the Item

This very fine carved relief panel was sculpted by Ferdinand Levillain, France's master of bas relief at the turn of the last century. Levillain was famous for his low reliefs in medallic work and finely-detailed bronze objects (most cast by the famed Barbidienne foundry), and was greatly admired in his day for giving a modern interpretation to Greek and Roman subjects. This unique piece, sculpted from a fine piece of walnut, depicts three nude male figures in a classical scene, one a figure in his prime resting in a chair and being served by a younger man, who are being watched by a bearded older man. All three figures depict the human figure in its ideal form, again an illustration of Levillain's devotion to Greek and Roman prototypes.
