About the Item

Elegant clear drop earrings, highlighted with grey paste, these Kenneth Jay Lane earrings, from the 1960s, give a feeling of earlier times, a more 'antiqued' look, whilst still retaining the glamour of New York 1960s style. And certainly very stylish for contemporary times. Kenneth Jay Lane was born 1932 in Detroit. He worked as a shoe designer for Christian Dior in New York, under Roger Vivier, before setting up ’ K.J.L.’, his vastly successful costume jewellery empire in 1963. His patronage by Diana Vreeland at Vogue soon brought him to the attention of Royalty and Hollywood alike, with the Duchess of Windsor being an avid collector and friend. Babe Paley, Jacqueline Onassis and many smart Manhattan personalities sported his jewellery, all circles in which he himself enjoyed circulating! – these pieces were immediately glamorous and striking! There is a great playfulness and diversity to his designs - his style is bright and eclectic, imitating themes as diverse as Moghul and Art Deco styles, including many ethnic and cultural styles in between. His most distinct pieces come from the days of the 1960's (jewels marked 'K.J.L.') until the late 1970's (jewels marked 'K.J.L.c'). He then used his full name on his signed pieces, and started a more mass appeal collection. He continues to this day with his QVC shopping channel, still fascinated and intrigued with it all - what incredible stamina he must have!

Unsigned smoke grey and soft brown cluster earrings, Schreiner of New York 1960s
By Schreiner of New York
Located in Greyabbey, County Down
A classic design in a very elegant colour combination from Schreiner of New York - sadly these earrings are unsigned, but are a well known and popular design from the New York manufacturer of always striking and glamourous designs. The subtle combination of a soft, almost peachy, brown coupled with a smokey shade of grey make them immediately noticeable when worn, and highly wearable! Henry Schreiner started the Schreiner Jewellery Company in 1939 and was director until his death in 1954. His daughter and son in law continued with the business until 1977. In the 1950s he made jewellery for Christian Dior. His jewellery is very distinctive for its use of unusual mounts and subtle colour combinations, using the finest quality rhinestones and crystals. He made exceptionally glamorous belts, bib necklaces, unusually coloured baroque brooches (his signature ‘ruffle’ brooch...
