Austro-Hungarian Yellow Gold Wilhelm Haarstrick St. George Dragon Fob / Pendant
Located in San Francisco, CA
This vest chain is an extraordinary example of goldwork from this period. The utmost care went into the tiniest details on everything from the dragon's feet holding the amethyst to the face of St. George. It is no wonder such care was taken with this piece as the maker, Wilhelm Haarstruck, was the court jeweler of the Hapsburg royal family. He also displayed his craft at the 1873 Vienna World's Fair. While traditionally this piece would've been worn with a pocket watch in a gentleman's vest pocket, it makes a gorgeous statement pendant necklace. Maker: Wilhelm Haarstrick Era: 1870s Materials: 14K Yellow Gold. This piece appears much higher karat because a chemical process called blooming was used to bring the pure gold to the surface. This process was only used for a brief period of time because it was extremely toxic and only master jewelers attempted it (and survived). Gemstones: 30-carat oval center amethyst; two (2) 5-carat square-cut amethysts Measurements: 5.5" total length; St. George and dragon...

Antique Sterling Silver Paste Cross Pendant, circa 1780
Located in Baltimore, MD
This is the wonderful Latin cross pendant you have been looking for. Crafted by 18th century jewelry artisans, our cross is made from 18th century paste and backed by sterling silver. A unique feature of Georgian jewelry is that as much care was taken in the design and craftsmanship of the back as on the front; the pendant can be worn on either side. One might wear the glittery paste side that will shimmer in the light at night, and for an informal day out, the more subdued silver side (pictures of both shown in photos). Almost two and one half inches in length, our cross makes a significant impact when hung from a silver chain. Paste is a gem like material made from a secret formula of leaded glass invented by George Ravenscroft, a 17th century London glassmaker and later perfected by George Strass, an 18th century French jeweler, designed to resemble precious gemstones. It took a great deal of labor to hand carve each gem and make the beautiful cluster designs seen on antique jewelry, shoe buckles and buttons and decorative objects. Paste appealed to women of modest means as well as the rich, who liked to wear paste as their traveling jewelry. The story of 18th century paste jewelry...

Antique Miers & Field Painted Silhouette Miniature Portrait of an Unknown Lady
Located in Baltimore, MD
Portrait miniatures reached their peak of popularity during the 18th century. They served the same purpose as small photographs of our loved ones do today. Their small size made them accessible for carrying around, and they were often mounted in lockets or brooches, like the one here. There were many artists who specialized in portrait miniatures, but the most famous of the British profilists were John Miers and John Fields. John Miers was the elder of the two and he set up his own studio on the Strand in London in 1788. King George III and Queen Charlotte were two of his most famous sitters. Miers most famous protege was John Field, who came to apprentice for him in London in 1800 and inherited the business upon Miers’ death. Fields was largely responsible for most of the profiles enhanced with bronzing as this, along with intricate detailing, was his specialty. Of note is the fact that his profiles were often signed Miers. The Miers signature was indicative of a studio name, though that does not mean Miers painted them. Like other classical painters of his day, John Field worked in other mediums, including landscapes, which were exhibited at the Royal Academy. Our pendant, which doubles as a brooch, shows a right facing silhouette on ivory of an unknown woman in a pleated mobcap. The antique bronzed...
