About the Item

This rare-to-market original necklace, made in 1967, is an articulated collar made of 18-karat polished white and yellow gold by Hans Richter, the German-born artist, co-founder, exponent, and historian of the Dada art movement. The neckpiece embodies the artist’s preoccupations with flow and movement, as well as positive and negative currents. The necklace is in excellent condition. It is marked Hans Richter, '67, no. 5/9, H2. The design was exhibited at the seminal and groundbreaking contemporary jewelry exhibition "Jewelry as Sculpture as Jewelry", at the Institute of Contemporary Art, in Boston in 1973. Born in Berlin in 1888, Hans Richter produced a large body of work—abstract paintings, films, art history, graphic art, and a minimal number of wearable art (or jewelry) works. In 1940, he moved to the United States and became a U.S. citizen. Here, Peggy Guggenheim organized his first solo show. Richter wrote the definitive first-person history of the Dada movement, published as "Art and Anti-Art "; made a film about Alexander Calder as late as 1963 and is known for important contributions to avant-garde cinema, with "Rhythmus 21" (1921) and 8x8: A Chess Sonata, the latter a collaboration with Max Ernst, Marcel Duchamp, Alexander Calder, and Jean Cocteau, among others. Richter died in 1976.
