Ancient Greek 5th Century BC Silver Medusa Coin Diamond 18K Gold Pendant

About the Item

The powerful image of the facing head of a Gorgon, a mythical creature with serpents for hair, is the centerpiece of this 18K gold pendant designed by Steven Battelle. In ancient Greece, the Gorgon, particularly Medusa, was a fearsome beast whose gaze turned men to stone. However, the Gorgon also held a potent protective quality. Its image was believed to ward off evil spirits and enemies, and act as a charm for safe travels and prosperity. This authentic "hemidrachm" silver coin was minted between 450-400 BC in the bustling port city of Apollonia, Pontica, nestled on what is now Bulgaria's western shores by the Black Sea. It thrived as a trade and naval center from the 7th century BC onwards. The coin's reverse displays an anchor entwined with a crayfish, a symbol that speaks to Apollonia's maritime prowess. It is set in a artisanally crafted "line-texture" bezel with accompanying 1.8 mm VS1 diamond accent. Please note the size relative to the dime. It is sent with a laminated lifetime coin certificate of authenticity. The 18K handmade hammered chain shown is not included, but can be ordered additionally. It comes in 18”, 20”, and 24” lengths. We discount our chains 20% when ordered with a pendant. Be Protected!
