Ancient Greek 4th Century BC Cyzikos Lion Coin Diamond 22K Gold Pendant

About the Item

An authentic silver "drachm" coin minted in the ancient Greek colony of Cyzikos (now in Western Turkey south of Istanbul) from 387-340 BC depicts the head of a lion above a tuna fish. Cyzicus was founded in the 7th century BC by Greek colonists from Miletus. It quickly became a prosperous city, due to its strategic location on the trade route between the Aegean Sea and the Black Sea. Cyzicus was also an important religious center, and it was home to a number of temples and sanctuaries. In the 4th century BC, Cyzikos was captured by the Persians. The golden era of Cyzikos came after the Peloponnesian War, ie. from the beginning of the 4th century BC. From 387 BC Cyzicus was under Persian control and in 334 BC it was conquered by the Macedonian army led by Alexander the Great. After Alexander's death, Cyzikos became part of the Hellenistic kingdom of Pergamon. This very rare coin is set in a Steven Battelle designed handmade "double jawan" granulated 22K gold setting with a 1.8 mm VS1 diamond accent below. This pendant is sent with a laminated lifetime coin certificate of authenticity. The 18K handmade hammered chain shown is not included, but can be ordered additionally. It comes in 18”, 20”, and 24” lengths. We discount our chains 20% when ordered with a pendant. Historic, and truly one-of-a-kind!
