Ancient Greek 4th Century BC Silver Lion Coin 22K Gold Pendant

About the Item

A small, authentic ancient Greek silver "hemidrachm" from 350-330 BC depicting a lion looking back over its shoulder is set within an exquisite handmade 22K granulated setting surrounded with radiating geometrically stacked "jawan" designed by Steven Battelle. This coin is from the ancient Greek colony of Cherronesos situated near the Gallipoli peninsular in what is now Turkey. At that time lions still roamed in that region. The coins are thought to have been used in support of trade with the cities along the coast of the Black Sea. Cherronesos was under the control of Athens from 560 BC to 338 BC, aside from a brief period during this time when it was controlled by Persia. The coin itself is 12 mm in diameter and the whole pedant is 27 mm (just over an inch) long. This pendant comes with a laminated coin certificate of authenticity. The handmade 1.8 mm diameter 20 inch 22K gold woven chain shown is not currently included, but can be combined with the pendant to be ordered together. We discount our chains 20% when ordered with a pendant.

Greek cities often used animals as identifying symbols on their coins. For this purpose Ephesus used both the bee and the deer.
