About the Item

A beautiful facing image of the Greek god Apollo is depicted on one side of this authentic silver "drachm" coin from 340-334 BC that was minted during the reign of the Carian "satrap" Pixodarus. Caria was an ancient region in what is now the southwestern coast of Turkey, which went back and forth between the Greek and Persian empires in antiquity. Pixodarus was one of the last Carian satraps (Persian provincial ruler) before the territory was conquered by Alexander the Great in 334 BC. The Greek god Apollo is one of the Olympian deities in classical Greek mythology. The national divinity of the Greeks, Apollo has been recognized as a god of archery, music and dance, truth and prophecy, healing, the Sun and light, poetry, and more. He is the son of Zeus and Leto, and the twin brother of Artemis, goddess of the hunt. The reverse side of the coin features Zeus Labroundos, a local depiction of the the chief Greek diety. This coin is set within and ancient-inspired handmade 22K granulated setting designed by Steven Battelle. It comes with a laminated lifetime coin certificate of authenticity.
