About the Item

Details: A stunning unique antique pendant in 22K yellow gold with 11 gemstones, and studded with diamonds, engraved and adorned with enamel work. Originally an armband, and later converted to a pendant. Both sides are adorned, and enameled. The backside engraving and enamel work has birds and floral theme. Much of the enamel has worn, but it doesn't detract from the unique beauty of this piece. Both the bail and the pearl were added at some point when this armband was converted to a pendant. The main arm band is 22K gold (tested 22K), the bail is 14K as well as the pearl and were added later. History: A rare late 18th or early 19th Century Indian Mughal "Bazuband or Bajuband" with 11 gemstones (North India, Lucknow). Originally an armband of rectangular form with hinged attachments on either, in the manner of a "Navaratna", this piece has been converted to a pendant at some point. Navaratna: Sanskrit compound word meaning "nine gems" or "ratnas". Jewelry created in this style has important cultural significance in many southern, and south-eastern Asian cultures as a symbol of wealth, status, and also as having other claimed talismanic benefits to health and wellbeing. The setting of the stones is believed to hold mystical powers, tied to astrology, mythology and intrinsically linked to the Indian religions of Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism. The historic origin of the significance behind the nine gems has proved impossible to trace but is tied to mythological concepts around cosmology and astrology and the "Navagrahas", or "nine celestial gods". This piece is unique and would be a great addition to your collection! Appraisal Reads: ONE (1) ANTIQUE YELLOW GOLD MUGHAL ARMLET: One (1) antique twenty-two karat yellow gold Mughal armlet. Set in the center are nine (9) sliced Polki cut diamonds (the center diamond is cracked). Set around the center include the following gemstones: turquoise, coral, cat’s eye quartz, grossular garnet, hessonite garnet, pink and blue sapphire. *Note: Gemstones are sight IDs as an RI could not be obtained. The front is decorated with green enamel with carving underneath. The back is decorated with red, white, and green enamel in a floral motif. Some enamel is missing which is consistent with the age of the armlet (19th Century). The armlet has been converted into a pendant with a fourteen karat yellow gold bale added to the top, and a freshwater pearl drop added to the bottom. The armlet measures 3.0 x 1.25 inches and weighs 20.8 grams. Size: Pendant total length is 3 inches by 1 1/4 inch at the widest point, and this piece weighs 20.8 grams. Condition: The overall condition of this piece is very good, with some age expected wear as this piece dates between 1700-1800's. The center diamond has a crack, which is visible in the above photos. This is accounted for in the pricing. Please ask all necessary questions prior to placing an order!
