Andrew Grima Diamond Sapphire and 18 Karat Yellow Gold Ring 1977

About the Item

A brilliant-cut diamond, baguette-cut sapphire, and 18-karat gold ring by Andrew Grima, 1977. This stylish ring, which is a size 07¼, would make a perfect non-traditional engagement ring for the design-minded person. The ring also has an impecable pedigree. It is signed Grima, Stamped AGLtd, and has London hallmarks with the date letter "c" for 1977. Andrew Grima was arguably the most important, innovative avant-garde London jeweler who transformed the jewelry scene of the 1960s and 1970s in England. He celebrated form and color as an artist or a contemporary brutalist architect might; he emphasized nontraditional materials, a wide range of stones from gems to hardstones, shells, and even in one instance, lichen, preferring to leave them closer to their natural state; he textured and cut into yellow gold in new, more modern ways. Grima’s clients included several members of the British royal family, including Queen Elizabeth II, as well as British and Hollywood celebrities of the time. Grima was the first and only jeweler to win the Duke of Edinburgh Prize for Elegant Design; he received a Royal Warrant in 1970. His jewelry may be found in private and public collections worldwide, such as the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Goldsmiths' Company. Andrew Grima’s work was prominently featured in the 2018 exhibition “London Originals: The Jeweler’s Art in Radical Times,” co-sponsored by Wright and the Mahnaz Collection. This ring is featured in the research catalog “London Originals,” which includes an extended original essay on the British avant-garde jewelers of the 1960s and 1970s, of which Grima was in the vanguard. The catalog is available at the Mahnaz Collection.

He helped spearhead the mid-century British art jewelry movement and revitalize an industry decimated by World War II deprivations. Entirely self-taught, he rose to prominence in the 1960s, with his sculptural style capturing the free spirit of the times. In 1966 Grima's work came to the attention of the royal family after Lord Snowden purchased several pieces for Princess Margaret, most notably the Balmoral Lichen Brooch. That same year Prince Phillip gave the Queen a carved ruby and diamond brooch (known as the Ruby Venus Brooch...
