About the Item

A modernist sterling silver candelabra with an organic, sculptural form designed by Henning Koppel (1918-1981) for Georg Jensen in 1946 entitled #956. This was Koppel's first hollowware design for Georg Jensen and was quite a radical departure for the company not only for its form but also for its production. Jensen, at that time, had only produced silver pieces by methods of hand hammering whereas #956 was crafted using the casting method. The candelabra features three arms over differing heights and sits atop three feet. Although not oversized, at 1226 grams it is quite a substantial piece. It is hard to date the piece because Jensen hallmarks changed very little after 1945, however the previous owner of this piece had a small sticker on the bottom with '1962' written on it, inclining us to believe it was manufactured in the 1960s. Henning Koppel is one of Jensen's most renown designers who produced many iconic pieces for the company during his period with the firm. His most recognisable designs are his 'Pregnant Duck' pitcher, his 'HK' pitchers in several sizes, along with several watches and clocks. Koppel was known for his fluid lines, curves and asymmetry, all of which are seen in his famed '#956' candelabra. It should be noted that the #956 candelabra requires thinner taper candles than the standard dinner tapers that are available for purchase in most department stores. These can be sourced online and are often seen in Scandinavian and German homewares stores. Marked - 'DENMARK' 'STERLING' 'DESSIN' 'HK' '956' & the Georg Jensen logo Measures - 17.5cm W x 12.5cm D x 9cm H Total weight of piece - 1226 grams
