About the Item

This rare Dutch 18th century silver sugar sifter from Amsterdam is by Hendrik Nieuwland (active 1785-1806) and dated 1788. With a gently curved handle to rest on edge of sugar bowl affording an easy grip when sifting sugar, the lobed bowl is decorated with delicate patter of openwork foliage, crescents and scrolls. Stamped with city mark of crowned 3 Xs for Amsterdam, with a fineness of .875, with date letter D and maker's initials HN. 4 1/2 in. (11.4 cm) long. 21 grams
