Small Dutch Silver Octagonal Bowl, 1918

About the Item

Charming miniature Dutch octagonal bowl possibly patterned on a sugar bowl first introduced in the Netherlands in the 18th century, on an octagonal pedestal stand, made in 1918, together with a tiny silver spoon. In early 18th century Netherlands sugar bowls like teapots, were small due to the rarity of tea. By 1710 the sugar bowl appeared, often with a cover; there is a ridge on top of this one which may have accommodated a cover. These were usually round however octagonal examples occasionally resurface on the market and early ones are quite rare. The bowl stamped with rampant Lion hallmark for 893 silver, with date letter I for 1918, maker's mark and another punch with letter M. The spoon stamped sterling. Bowl: 2 1/8 x 2 1/8 x 2 in. (5.4 x 5.4 x 5.1 cm); spoon: 2 1/4 in. (5.7 cm) long. 1.77 troy ounces; 55.1 grams (2)
